Mew Lake Algonquin Provincial Park
Mew Lake Park Map
Mew Lake is the location and base camp for our annual boys weekend. My dad, my brother and brother in laws have been coming here the first weekend in May for a few years now.
Mew Lake campground is the only camp ground in Algonquin Park that is open all year long. Most provincial parks do not even open until the 24th of May weekend. I have visited with my brother in early October and although the weather is not great, there is always enough to do.
If you want to experience winter camping but are afraid to camp in a tent on snow, you can rent a yurt. The most attractive features of the yurts located at Mew Lake are electric heat and an insulated floor which makes for comfortable camping during the spring, fall, and winter seasons.
The Madawaska River runs right through Mew Lake campground and with the Track and Tower hiking trail near by and the Old Railway Bike trail, there is always plenty of options. We seem to see something different every year that we visit.
The Old Railway Bike Trail is a terrific new family bicycle trail. For most of its 10-kilometer distance the trail follows the abandoned bed of the historic Ottawa, Arnprior, and Parry Sound Railway, built across the Park in 1895 . We bicycled to the Pog Lake campground were the whitefish dam is located. This is a beautiful spot.
If you can't wait until the 24th of May weekend to get out and go camping, then Mew lake is your answer. I definitely recommend it at any time of year.
