Presquile Provincial Park

I love Presquile Provincial Park. It has one of the largest marsh boardwalks I have ever seen, hundreds of bird species, great views of Lake Ontario and a great day use area for swimming or picnics. The main beach has been given back to the birds and other wildlife so it's not much good for swimming any more, but the day use area is a great alternative and dogs are allowed there.

If you are camping in the provincial park, privacy may be an issue. Camp sites are close together and there are not many trees. It is right on Lake Ontario however, and the view can be spectacular. It was relaxing sitting in my collapsible lawn chair sipping on a glass of wine facing the lake shore. Then again I am a water lover, and if you are like me, I could sit there all day looking out over the water.

Presquile is a peninsula which is a major flyway for migrating birds, home to waterfowl and shorebirds, and a staging point for Mexico-bound monarch butterflies. On islands to the west, colonies of gulls, cormorants, terns and herons nest. This is the main reason why the beach has been given back to the local wildlife. A minor negative if you are a beach lover.

At the tip of the park are Ontario's second-oldest operating lighthouse and the original lighthouse keeper's cottage. There is also an Interpretive center and gift store located here with some excellent exhibits with a short movie to watch about a schooner called SPEEDY which sank carrying a prisoner and important people who were to try him.
