Windy Ridge Conservation Authority

Windy Ridge Conservation Area is the newest addition to the Kawartha Conservation Authority. 87 acres of land was acquired in 1999. The lookout is the highlight of the trail overlooking the Fleetwood Creek wetlands where the Fleetwood creek and Pigeon Rivers meet.

I visited Windy Ridge Conservation Area on a beautiful day in May. As you can see by the pictures of this trail, you are quite high above the valley, to which you get an awesome view of the Fleetwood Creek wetlands were it joins Pigeon River.

The trail is 1.3 km in length, which is quite hilly at some points, especially at the start. You then reach the highlight of the trail which is the lookout. Then you make your way down towards the valley and forests, which winds up near water. Then you continue your hike through the ridge back to your car. Unfortunately, there is no trail throughout the forest however; this would definitely be an awesome addition to this trail if ever done.

As you make your way through the ridge, you come upon quite an odd looking tree. This particular tree is called the habitat tree. This is where porcupines nest. I actually didn’t see any porcupines, which I was hoping I would, but my son definitely did not wish too at all. You can see this tree from all points of the trail as you are walking along, it keeps catching your eye, making you want to see it up close.

There are washroom facilities and a picnic shelter as well as picnic tables throughout the ridge for you to relax and have a picnic lunch if you wish. Of all the trails, which I have visited in the last 2 weeks, Windy Ridge was not one of my favorites, but as time goes on, it would be interesting to see how it develops.
